PROTECTIVE LININGS

01.

International Convention Centre (ICC), Durban

(Below ground Waterproofing System Design, Detailing and Site Monitoring)

DPA were appointed as the Specialist Waterproofing Consultants on the original ICC Durban waterproofing contract. Due to the tunnel aspect of the facility being positioned below the water table, this waterproofing had to be carried out in conjunction with the structural installation of the entire below ground structure including piling.

This project was a first in South Africa for a bonded waterproofing system and the biggest internationally for the UK based supplier.

02.

Hillside Aluminium Smelter, Richard’s Bay, KZN

(Impoundment Dams Lining System Design, Detailing & Site Monitoring)

Hillside Aluminium had engaged DPA Specialist Consulting Engineers, as an independent civil consultant, to ensure that the Department of Water Affairs (DWA) water license requirements were met. This engagement was also to ensure that the Client’s commitment and intent to comply with environmental aspects were met. In order to reduce the environmental risks associated with the construction phase operations, the project to improve the dams had been broken into 4 phases.

The project entailed the re-lining and refurbishment and upgrading of storm water impoundment dams for Hillside Aluminium smelter in Richards Bay. The impoundment dams cover an area of approximately 42,000m² and have a capacity of over 70,000m³. Damage to the dams had occurred as a result of high groundwater levels beneath the liner causing uplift and breaking the rigid sand-cement screed floor, which in turn had ruptured the geomembrane liner.

DPA’s appointment provided for the design and detail of an upgraded trafficable lining and refurbishment system for the impoundment dams project and to provide full time monitoring, quality auditing and inspection of the Contractors works. Two differing lining protective overlay systems were used successfully.

03.

Two Oceans Aquarium

(Design, Detailing & Construction Monitoring of the Lining System for the new Open Ocean Predator Tank Exhibit)

DPA were commissioned to carry out the design of a bonded elastomeric lining system as part of an international Consultant contingent and to assist with the quality audit monitoring of the new Polyurea lining system for the Two Oceans Aquarium Ocean Tank project. To ensure the anticipated performance and durability of the designed lining system for the predator tank, it was necessary to monitor the preparation, and application works to be carried out by the specialist lining contractor.

DPA were also appointed as a member of the Design Team which included international experts’ firms from USA and Cape based Consultants.
